At RBR, we’re proud of the people who show up every day with commitment, integrity, and a willingness to go the extra mile. Few embody that spirit more literally than Wayne Zaugg.
Wayne cycles to work every single day—rain or shine, summer or winter—adding roughly 15 km daily to his routine. Through one part of RBR’s Greener Commuting Incentive Program, we celebrate team members who choose two wheels over four, but Wayne has taken that commitment to another level. Since 2020, he’s driven to work less than a dozen times, all while working 100% in the office.
Now, Wayne is taking his passion for cycling even further.
The Pikangikum Ice Road Challenge
Wayne is participating in the Pikangikum Ice Road Challenge, a demanding 4-day winter expedition that includes a 125 km fat bike journey from Red Lake, Ontario, to Pikangikum First Nation. Riders will face snow, ice, and extreme winter conditions, with temperatures expected to range from –20°C to –30°C.

This challenge is one of two winter fundraising events hosted by New Hope Community Bikes, in partnership with local community leaders and supported by the Ontario Provincial Police. The funds raised directly support the Indigenous Bike Program, which focuses on:
-
Providing Indigenous youth access to cycling education
-
Supplying community bikes
-
Equipping youth with tools for independent bike maintenance
-
Supporting the development of a community-run bike shop
Why Wayne Rides
For Wayne, cycling is far more than exercise or transportation.
“I love cycling as it is such an efficient and independent transportation. I also love what it does for me physically and mentally.
Cycling lets me experience the continuity of a journey; I get to feel the shape of the distance; I travel at a pace where the world unfolds around me rather than blurs past”
Wayne’s love for cycling is deeply connected to his love of Canada. Originally from Alberta, he’s travelled coast to coast—Newfoundland, Labrador, and the territories are still on his list. When he learned about the Ice Road Challenge and its mission to support Indigenous youth through cycling, it immediately resonated.
“So when I heard about the Ice Road Challenge which acts as a fundraiser for Indigenous bike programs, it was a nice fit.”

Supporting the Journey
Wayne is fundraising to help expand access to cycling for Indigenous youth—supporting education, independence, and community-led initiatives that create lasting impact.
